Since the line between what a Braxton Hicks and a “real” contraction has been blurred in recent years’ studies and a woman who suffers from IU can rarely tell the difference between non-labor IU-type contractions and cervix dilating preterm labor contractions anyways, many doctors believe in carefully monitoring a woman diagnosed with an IU.  Therefore, our group of IU sufferers agreed that

Irritable Uterus, in and of itself, may not cause a woman to deliver a premature baby.  We, however, believe that an irritable uterus can and often DOES, in some mysterious way, trigger a woman’s uterus to start preterm labor, which can cause preterm birth.

Plainly stated, you can never know when a woman with an IU can suddenly switch to being a woman in preterm labor….or when her IU can stop contracting all together.  Women who suffer from IU run the gamut – many deliver prematurely, some right on time, and a few others have even needed to be induced in order to restart or get labor to progress further.
